Out of My Life and Thought: an Autobiography by Albert Schweitzer
-organist and organ builder
-went into medicine later in life
Believed in the "Affirmation of Life" as opposed to the "Negation of life". Affirmation of life is what is necessary to make progress. Primitive societies are just happy to survive, and don’t make progress they just survive. Western civilization after the Renaissance got to where they could make progress. Ancient Greeks started to make progress until they went into resignation. The Persian empire was taken over by Islam. The Chinese made progress 100 years ago but Western civilization has been making the most.
The philosophy he was seeking to develop lead to this phrase popping into his mind: “Reverence of Life…” This concept brings the power of the divine down to the human level. The concept of transcendence is that the spiritual side of reality is the important part. But the concept of "Reverence of Life" brings spirit into flesh.
